Eastern Oregon University offers various student worker positions with two options for remote students: tutoring for the writing center or working on EOU’s newspaper, The Voice. These positions offer students the opportunity to fund their education whether they live on campus or hours away.
After a student is hired, they meet with a member of the Payroll Office to fill out paperwork and get enrolled in the online employee database. It is through this database that a student worker can fill out their timesheet, view their pay stubs, and get a breakdown of their earnings and hourly pay.
The minimum hourly pay for EOU student workers is set at $12.50, reflective of the minimum wage in La Grande, Ore., where the main campus is located. This is the starting pay for most student workers and is often entered in the database automatically. Although it is accurate in most instances, this can be an issue for some remote student workers.
For hourly wage remote workers, an employer has to comply with the minimum wage laws within the jurisdiction in which the employee is located. This means that if you live in Portland, Ore., for example, your minimum hourly pay as an EOU student employee is $14.75 per hour, even though La Grande’s minimum wage is $12.50 per hour.
If you are a remote student worker at EOU, compare your hourly wage on the employee dashboard with the minimum wage in your area. If there is a discrepancy between these two numbers, contact the Payroll Office to have your hourly wage changed and receive any back pay owed to you.
The Payroll Office can be contacted from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday at 541-962-3286 or via email at payroll-group@eou.edu.
