We are looking to add to our team at The Voice. These positions are open to anyone, with any major, on-campus or remote. We are looking for a photo editor, multiple photographers, and multiple reporters. Students must be in good standing and have a B average. The Voice staff meet multiple times throughout the month to discuss publication and attendance is appreciated. Photo editor: The photo editor is responsible for assigning, selecting and editing photos for web and print publication. Strong communication skills are required, as is willingness to work as a team.
Recommended courses: Art 260: Beginning Photography; Art 261: Beginning Digital; Art 101: Foundations of Visual Literacy; Art 120: Design I.
General duties include:
- Coordinate with the Editor-in-Chief and the team member to identify photography needs
- Assign projects to photographers and keep track of the deadlines
- Review photos, edit and make necessary changes
- Decide which images to publish
- Ensure all assignment are shot and edited on time for publication
- Have solid knowledge of Photoshop, Capture One, or other photography specific software
- Possess a creative mind with an eye for detail and storytelling skills
- Possess time-management and leadership skills
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of photographic best practices and procedures
Photographer: A Voice photographer works closely with the photo editor, Editor-in-Chief and reporters in order to produce photographs fitting for upcoming publications. A creative eye and communication skills are top priority.
Recommended course: Art 101: Foundations of Visual Literacy; Art 120: Design; Art 260: Beginning Photography; Art 261: Beginning Digital Photography.
General duties include:
- Capturing and processing images until you achieve desired results
● Use and maintain modern and traditional technical equipment (cameras, lenses etc)
● Arrange objects, scenes, lighting and background to adhere to specifications
● Direct participants within the photo shoot when needed
● Archive photographic images and maintain database
● Maintain an in depth understanding of photographic best practices and procedures
● Shooting, lighting and printing skills
● Ability to juggle multiple tasks
Reporter: A Voice reporter is responsible for researching, interviewing and writing assigned content within a structured time frame. They report directly to the Editor-in-Chief and must be able to take constructive feedback from the copy editor.
Recommended Courses: Writing 230: News Writing and the two following courses as they become available for enrollment through EOU: Hum 210: Media Lab and Hum 410 Media Lab.
General duties include:
- Collecting, verifying, and analyzing information for content
- Assembling findings into a stable story
- Writing and delivering news stories with the reader’s perspective in mind
- Publish or broadcast news stories
- Receive assignments or investigate news leads/tips
- Abide by journalism’s ethics and codes.
- Maintain notes and audio recordings
- Cooperate with the Editor-in-Chief, the Copy Editor, Faculty Advisor, and other Voice staff as needed.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest current events in the “beat” by studying papers, attending events, etc.
