Women’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. — Eastern Oregon opened their season in Spokane on Saturday, falling 21-5 to Whitworth in their season opener.

Offense was hard to come by for the Mounties in their first game back on the field, managing 11 shots compared to Whitworth’s 28 attempts.

Turnovers and ground balls were closely contested, as Eastern Oregon committed 14 turnovers compared to Whitworth’s 13, while the Mountaineers secured 16 ground balls, just slightly fewer than the Pirates who collected 17. Whitworth demonstrated superiority in draw controls, winning 24 compared to Eastern Oregon’s 5.

Saydee Hetrick led the Mounties’ scoring efforts with 4 goals, supported by an additional score from Maddy Woodruff. Sarah Orr, Jade McCoy, and Woodruff each set their teammates up with assists throughout the contest.

Despite Eastern Oregon’s best efforts, Whitworth put on an impressive offensive display with ten different Pirates finding the back of the net. Rebecca Irwin led all scorers with 4 goals, while Nikki Beers, Kenison Turner, Jordyn Bennett, and Campbell Vincent each scored 3 goals. Caitlin Smith, Megan Whitman, Kenzie Hemman, and Abby Hahn also made significant offensive contributions.

Whitworth’s scoring was orchestrated by the combination of Sierra Witte and Rebecca Irwin, combining for 6 total assists.

Women’s Lacrosse will make their first appearance at home for tomorrow’s matchup with Whitman College, set to get started at 1:00 p.m. at Community Stadium.
