ATHERTON, Calif. – Eastern Oregon women’s wrestling team delivered a commendable performance at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Wrestling Championship Tournament on Sunday. Despite stiff competition, the Mountaineers secured a fifth-place finish with a total of 72.0 team points.
Trinity Tafoya made a run at the CCC 191-pound title, before eventually falling to the #1 nationally ranked Tavia Heidelberg-Tillotson out of Menlo College. Irma Retano also reached podium for the Mounties, defeating #11 Arieana Arias from Providence to claim a third place finish.
The CCC recently set a record and received the highest number of automatic qualifiers to the NAIA Championships with a total of 43. With Sunday’s results, Irma Retano and Liv Wieber have all qualified to represent Eastern Oregon at the second annual NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championships, held March 8th and 9th at Harold Newman Arena in Jamestown, North Dakota.

With the conclusion of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament, a 10-member committee comprising conference raters and oversight members will convene to choose the remaining at-large qualifiers, completing a selection of 210 wrestlers. The list will be made public on Tuesday, February 27th, by 3 p.m. Seeding and preliminary brackets will be announced on NAIA.org by 5 p.m. (CST) on Friday, March 1st, 2024.
