LA GRANDE, Ore. – EOU Women’s Lacrosse fell to Whitman College 21-7 on Sunday afternoon in Community Stadium.
Whitman College’s Madeleine Sherry led the scoring with eight goals and two assists. Olivia Banuelos contributed four goals and two assists, while Teagan Huff and Gracie Maulik each scored three goals. Whitman College dominated the draw controls, leading 23-6.
For Eastern Oregon, Jade McCoy scored three goals, and Saydee Hetrick added two goals and two assists. Natalie Vanderploeg and Maddy Woodruff also added a goal each.
The game started with Whitman College taking an early lead with Gracie Maulik, Maddie Jones, Madeleine Sherry, and Olivia Banuelos scoring unassisted goals. Jade McCoy scored the first goal for Eastern Oregon, followed by goals from Saydee Hetrick and Natalie VanderPloeg. The first half ended with Whitman College leading 13-3.
In the second half, Eastern Oregon tried to fight back with goals from McCoy, Vanderploeg, and Maddy Woodruff, but Whitman’s lead was too big to overcome despite a defensive turnaround from the Mounties who held the Blues to just three second-half goals.
Eastern Oregon goalkeeper Sydney Vopat made seven saves in the match, while Whitman College’s goalkeepers combined for four.
Eastern Oregon (0-2) will look to bounce back in their next match. The Mountaineers are scheduled to take on Linfield University this coming Friday in McMinnville, Oregon with a start time of 6 p.m. That game will be followed on Saturday by a tilt with Pacific University at 1 p.m. in Forest Grove.
