Upon entering Ten Depot on the evening of January 17, the first thing you notice is the smell. It is not overpowering, but it’s strong enough to tell you that you’re in for a treat. The second thing you notice is the strumming of guitars over the swelling chorus of people. A color changing light illuminates a dim stage, and Kory Quinn is warming up his guitar with two men: one plucking the strings of a double bass, and one strumming a second guitar.
The music grows louder as the band begins their first song of the night. When Quinn starts to sing, it is soft, but once he really gets going, there’s a strong, heart folk vibe to it. After swelling to a chorus, the song winds down and the music of people having a great night takes back the room.
Kory Quinn is a man of average height. He is dressed in a fairly nice pair of jeans and a button-up shirt. He shifts his weight side to side as he plays his guitar during instrumentals between verses. At times, he holds his guitar much like one might hold onto an electric guitar. Despite this, the music is very much folk. It is upbeat, catchy, and just the right amount of country.
Even though the audience was involved in conversation during the music, they would always pause and applaud after each song. Between songs, you can observe the talented musicians conversing among themselves and slightly tuning their instruments. By the fourth or fifth song, there were people dancing in the area around the band and clearly having a great time.
Occasionally joining Quinn in song, the second guitar playing is wearing a baseball cap and has a studded guitars strap. The double bass player, Luke McKern, provides a strong beat to keep the rest of the band in line. Singing songs about anything from love to the mountains, the three men create an upbeat and inviting environment for a nice meal among friends.
By the time you are served your meal, you have been immersed in the music so well that you forgot that you had even been waiting.
